San Diego Dia de la Mujer Latina Health Festival

MANA de San Diego created the first San Diego Día de la Mujer Latina (SDDML) in 2004 to serve the health needs of the low-income Latino community in San Diego County including families without health coverage who have nowhere else to turn to for medical screenings.

MANA de San Diego offers two health fairs every year in National City (May) and El Cajon (Fall). The health festival offers the following screenings for nearly 1,000 participants yearly: breast exams/mammograms, cholesterol, glucose, bone density, vision, dental, blood pressure, and HIV tests.

SDDML is coordinated by MANA members and volunteers, in partnership with local health agencies and programs, such as: Breast Cancer Network of Strength, Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts, Family Health Centers of San Diego, Inner Images Inc., La Maestra Community Health Centers, Shiley Eye Center, UCSD AIDS Research Institute.
Dr. Ana M. Navarro (UCSD) chairs the committee and event. For more information on this event or how you can participate, contact the MANA office.

Disparities in women 40 years and older ever receiving a mammogram are still pervasive with lower screening rates in groups of limited formal education and low socioeconomic level. The San Diego Día de la Mujer Latina targets the Latino communities in San Diego in which breast health screening disparities are most pronounced.
