MANA Health Events
From a conversation to a lifestyle – MANA de San Diego makes health and well-being a priority.
“Plática”, the Spanish word for a chat, a talk, a conversation among friends. Having an annual conversation – a plática on important health issues facing Latinas – was how MANA de San Diego first addressed the health and well-being of its members and for our Latino community. The pláticas served hundreds.
Then, between 1999 and 2015, came the annual MANA de San Diego Health Fair – a unique and powerful gathering of healthcare institutions, agencies, programs and providers - brought together by MANA de San Diego in one setting to provide free, quality, culturally sensitive and much needed health screenings to the under-served Latino community. The MANA Health Fair served thousands.
That was then.
This is now.
A New Direction
In 2015, as part of its strategic plan, MANA de San Diego, acknowledged the growing need for a healthier Latino community. In response, MANA directed its Health Committee to integrate health across all MANA programs, in a concentrated effort improve the health and well-being of the Latino community, starting with our members.
MANA’s strategic plan for incorporating health discussions with our members and the Latino community we serve includes three areas of concentration:
- promoting community health events and fairs
- coordinating health seminars
- supporting professional development in health careers
In 2016, as an acknowledgement of MANA’s commitment to better health, the County of San Diego recognized MANA de San Diego as a LIVE WELL San Diego Partner, enabling partnerships with healthcare organization that are sharing best health practices and are hosting programs which support healthy, safe and thriving communities – thereby enriching MANA members, Latinas and the communities we live in and serve.
